Building energy simulation can be a powerful tool to investigate design variations that improve comfort and reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling. Currently, NatHERS simulations for new homes are usually done once the design is fully developed, by which time design decisions are ‘baked in’, with little opportunity for meaningful change. Once a design has been developed, and the client is invested, it can be difficult and expensive to correct a non-compliant design. The recent increase in required NatHERS star rating in some states is making this issue more common.
Introducing ProtoStar, an online platform that can quickly estimate the star rating of a design concept in a matter of minutes. It can pinpoint problem areas and provide design options to improve the rating.
ProtoStar returns design freedom to the house designer; NatHERS star outcomes for their house design can be rapidly improved. ProtoStar can work with designs at all stages of development, from early concepts to final design. All that is required are CAD created plan drawings in PDF, and a few simple user inputs. Since it is quick and easy to use, the star outcome can be checked at several stages during design development so there are no surprises when the final design is passed on to the assessor.
